Finchley and Barnet sit at the top of the Northern line, in the London Borough of Barnet. If you're moving here, especially from a flat in inner London to a family house, it pays to plan the move around the size of the home, the street outside and the parking.
This guide covers the area, the homes, transport and what to plan for moving day. For a price, see our house removals in London.
Finchley and Barnet at a glance
- Finchley takes in East Finchley, Finchley Central, West Finchley and North Finchley. The first three have Northern line stations.
- Barnet (EN5) sits further north, with High Barnet station at the end of the Northern line.
- Golders Green and Hampstead Garden Suburb are also in the London Borough of Barnet.
The homes
The borough has a wide mix of homes: period terraces, larger semi-detached houses, and purpose-built blocks of flats, many of them along the main roads. Parts of it, including Finchley Church End, Hampstead Garden Suburb and Golders Green, are conservation areas.
What that means for the move:
- Moving into a family house usually means more boxes and furniture than a flat, and sometimes a bigger vehicle. Lofts, sheds and garages add up.
- Drives and wider streets in some parts make access easier than in inner London. Others are lined with residents' cars.
- Flats on main roads may have restrictions on stopping outside, or a shared entrance and stairs.
Getting around
The Northern line runs through Highgate, East Finchley, Finchley Central, West Finchley, Woodside Park and Totteridge & Whetstone to High Barnet. Mill Hill East is also on the Northern line, and so is Golders Green, on the route to Edgware. Buses run along the main roads.
Parking and permits on moving day
On moving day the removals vehicle needs to stop as close to your door as it legally can.
- Check whether your street has controlled parking, and its hours. Check the street signs or Barnet Council's website.
- A parking suspension keeps space free outside your home for the vehicle. In this borough you apply to Barnet Council. Check its parking suspensions page for the current notice period and fees before you fix your moving date.
- Main roads may have restrictions on stopping. Tell us if your home is on one, and we'll plan the loading.
Council and local services
When you move into Finchley or Barnet:
- Council tax: register with Barnet Council from your move-in date.
- Parking permits: apply for a residents' permit if your zone needs one.
- Bins and recycling: check collection days for your new address.
- Schools and GPs: check catchments and registration for the new address.
How we plan moves in Finchley (N3) and Barnet (EN5)
Finchley (N3) and Barnet (EN5) are both among the areas we cover. Every house removal starts with a full inventory assessment of your home, done digitally or in person, at no charge.
During the assessment we'll ask about:
- Access at both ends: drives, steps, stairs, lifts and the street outside.
- The size of the move: family houses usually hold more than people expect, including lofts, sheds and garages.
- Big or awkward items: wardrobes, sofas, pianos, garden furniture.
- Extras: whether you'd like packing or dismantling and reassembly.
From that assessment comes your fixed price quote, which covers everything we've identified, including stairs, restricted parking or long carrying distances. It's confirmed in writing before moving day. If the job changes materially from what we assessed, we agree any adjustment with you before going ahead.
