The homes

What Islington Homes Mean for Moving Day

Much of Islington's housing is Georgian and Victorian. Islington Council's guidance for Barnsbury describes "some of the finest sequences of squares and terraces in London", and many of those houses have front basement areas behind cast iron railings. In Canonbury, semi-detached mid-Victorian villas predominate in many streets (Islington Council, Canonbury guidelines; Barnsbury guidelines, checked 23 October 2026).

  • Steps up to the front door and down to basement flats add carrying time, so we note them in the assessment.
  • Tall terraces split into flats often mean shared stairs and no lift. Our guide to moving out of a flat conversion covers what to measure.
  • Big items that went in before a staircase was altered may need dismantling and reassembly.

Parking

Parking on Moving Day in Islington

Islington lets you park for a house move without a suspension in some cases. Its moving-home page says: "You can park outside your home when you are moving home free of charge". A liveried removal vehicle (one showing the company's branding) can stay as long as needed on a single yellow line or in a resident bay, if loading is continuous and there's no other loading restriction (Islington Council: parking to move home, checked 23 October 2026).

  • To guarantee a space, suspend a bay. Apply online at least 14 days ahead (10 days for Pay By Phone bays). For residents it's £164.80 on day 1 for as many spaces as you need, then £62.25 per space on day 2 and £67.50 per space per day after that. Each space is 5 metres (Islington Council: suspend a parking bay, checked 23 October 2026).
  • The council puts up notices about 10 days ahead where possible. Yellow lines, zebra crossings and keep-clear areas can't be suspended.
  • Loading on yellow lines without loading restrictions, and in resident and short-stay bays, is allowed for up to 40 minutes (Islington Council: loading and unloading, checked 23 October 2026).
  • Check your zone and its hours with the postcode finder on Islington's controlled parking zones page.
  • Red routes are different. Councils don't suspend red routes. On TfL red routes, moving house is a listed reason for a dispensation: £48 a day per vehicle on red lines or £38 in a bay, with at least 6 working days' notice (TfL red route dispensations, checked 23 October 2026).

Tell us your street when you ask for a quote. We'll work out whether the moving-day rule covers you or whether a suspension is worth booking, and plan the vehicle around it.
