Removals in Highgate
One of London's highest villages, split between two councils down the middle of the High Street, with lanes, steps and private roads. We work out whose rules apply before moving day.
Two councils
Which Council Is Your Street In?
Highgate village is divided between Haringey and Camden, and the boundary runs down the middle of Highgate High Street. The Camden side includes part of the village around Pond Square, Fitzroy Park and Waterlow Park; Haringey covers the east and north of the High Street, including Archway Road and Shepherd's Hill (Haringey Council, Highgate Conservation Area Appraisal, 2013; Camden Council, Highgate Conservation Area Appraisal, 2007; checked 25 October 2026).
That matters on moving day: suspensions, permits and zone hours come from whichever council your street is in, and the two councils' rules differ.
The homes
Hills, Lanes and Steps
- Height. Haringey's appraisal puts the top of the village at about 130 metres above sea level, with Highgate Hill becoming noticeably steeper below the High Street. Camden's describes a steep gradient on the High Street and a steep descent down Highgate West Hill.
- Lanes, steps and private roads. Camden's appraisal describes Fitzroy Park as a private road, gated at its northern end, and Holly Terrace as reached by a flight of steps from Highgate West Hill. Narrow lanes such as Bacons Lane run off the village, and Southwood Lane narrows on the Haringey side.
- Old terraces, mansion blocks and conversions. Both appraisals describe small 17th- to 19th-century terraced houses in the village core, Victorian and Edwardian parades with flats above on Archway Road, mansion blocks, and larger houses divided into flats.
On a stepped or gated address the vehicle may not get close at all, so we check access at both addresses and plan the carry and the crew size before we price. Our guide to moving out of a flat conversion covers measuring for narrow stairs.
Parking
Parking on Moving Day in Highgate
Haringey side: the Highgate (HGA), Highgate Station and Highgate Station Outer zones are controlled Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon, but Priory Gardens runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm (Haringey Council: all CPZ hours, checked 25 October 2026). Haringey suspends parking bays for removals: apply online, with an account, at least 2 weeks ahead. It's £80 per single car space per day plus a £280 administration fee, and a suspension only applies during the zone's hours (Haringey Council: apply for a parking bay suspension, checked 25 October 2026).
Camden side: Camden's open data lists zone CA-U Highgate as controlled Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 12:00, and CA-U(a) Dartmouth Park Hill as Monday to Friday 08:30 to 18:30 and Saturday 08:30 to 13:30 (Camden open data: controlled parking zones, checked 25 October 2026). Camden asks for suspensions to be booked at least 17 days ahead; for a house move the first day's space charge (up to 3 spaces) and the short-notice charge don't apply, but the £66.66 administration charge does (Camden Council: parking bay suspensions).
- Two-hour weekday zones on both sides mean an early or late loading window can avoid a suspension altogether. Tell us your street and we'll plan it.
- Check your street on Haringey's CPZ map or Camden's street search.
- Red routes are run by TfL, not the council: moving house is a listed reason for a TfL red route dispensation.

Moving in N6: Questions
Both. The boundary runs down the middle of Highgate High Street: the Camden side includes Pond Square, Fitzroy Park and Waterlow Park, and Haringey covers the east and north, including Archway Road. Your street's council sets its parking rules.
Most Highgate zones on both sides are controlled Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon. Exceptions include Priory Gardens (Haringey, Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm) and Dartmouth Park Hill CA-U(a) (Camden, weekdays 8.30am to 6.30pm and Saturday mornings). Checked 25 October 2026.
Usually, with planning. We check how close the vehicle can get and how far the crew carries, and include it in your fixed price, confirmed in writing before moving day.
