The homes

Shop Flats, Terraces and Georgian Houses

Hackney's appraisal of the Stoke Newington conservation area describes the High Street as "three or four storey terraced properties, most of which contain ground floor shops". On Church Street, homes are in the side streets "or above the shops in flats", and the road "curves noticeably and widens and narrows". The best buildings are Church Street houses from the early or mid-18th century, and the side streets have matching terraces of late 19th-century houses (Hackney Council: Stoke Newington conservation area, appraisal 2004, checked 27 October 2026). Further east, Northwold and Cazenove is a late-Victorian estate built between 1865 and 1895 (Hackney Council).

  • Flats above shops usually mean a narrow internal staircase and no forecourt, so we plan the carry and where the vehicle stops.
  • Victorian terraces split into flats mean shared stairs and no lift. See our guide to moving out of a flat conversion.
  • Listed and conservation-area houses get extra protection for doors, floors and banisters.

Parking

Parking on Moving Day in Stoke Newington

Hackney lists removals as a reason to suspend parking bays. It's £44 per bay per day plus a £100 admin fee, applied for online at least 7 working days ahead, or there's an extra £161 late fee. For a move, Hackney discounts the bay fee for up to 3 bays on the first day, so its own example puts 3 bays for 1 day at £100. A space with no marked bays counts as a 5m section (Hackney Council: parking bay suspension, checked 27 October 2026).

  • Dispensations are the cheaper option: 1 or 2 per house move, each covering one space for one day, but they don't guarantee a space and only cover vehicles up to 3,500kg, 2.27m high and 5.25m long. That rules out a large removal lorry (Hackney Council: parking dispensations).
  • Yellow lines: Hackney allows domestic removals to load continuously for up to 40 minutes. Anything longer needs a suspension or a dispensation.
  • Zones vary a lot. Stoke Newington (E) runs into the evening on weekdays, while Rectory Road (R) runs Monday to Friday 7am to 11am and Stamford Hill (T) 10am to midday. Clissold (M) roads west of Milton Grove have longer hours on Arsenal match days (Hackney Council: parking zones). Check your street on the council's zone map and the street signs.
  • Stoke Newington High Street and Stoke Newington Road (the A10) are TfL red routes, and Hackney doesn't suspend bays on red routes. Red lines ban all stopping and loading, so a move there needs a TfL dispensation or loading from a side street (Hackney Council: red routes).

Getting in

Bus Gate, Filters and School Streets

  • The Church Street bus gate outside the Red Lion runs 7am to 7pm, and only buses, cyclists and emergency vehicles can pass. It's part of the Stoke Newington low traffic neighbourhood, which also has five 24-hour traffic filters. Every address can still be reached by car, but the route matters (Hackney Council: Stoke Newington LTN, checked 27 October 2026).
  • School Streets close to traffic, delivery vehicles included, from 8.30 to 9.30am and 3 to 4pm on school days. Nearby zones include Clissold Road, Lancell Street and Dumont Road (Hackney Council: School Streets). We time arrivals around them.

Stoke Newington has no Tube station. Stoke Newington, Rectory Road and Stamford Hill are on the London Overground Weaver line. Nearby areas we cover: Highbury · Islington · Crouch End & Hornsey.

After the move, tell Hackney you're moving for council tax. If you pay by Direct Debit, you may need to set up a new one.
